A Texas mother reported her son to the police after he told her he had sexually assaulted their 68-year-old neighbor.
Bexar County Sheriff's deputies arrested 29-year-old Gino Anthony Bononcini on Friday, June 10. According to a report, he is charged with sexual assault and burglary of a habitation with intent to commit a felony.
The suspect's mother, Roxanne Bononcini, was the one who gave a statement to investigators implicating her son after he told her that he had 'violated' their neighbor, reports the San Antonio Express-News.
At around 4 a.m., on April 25, Gino allegedly broke into the elderly neighbor’s home through a window and sexually assaulted her, police said.
The victim said that when she woke up to use the bathroom, she saw the suspect standing in the hallway.
She asked the suspect in Spanish: "Who's there?", according to documents.
When she screamed "Don't kill me," the suspect put his hand over her mouth and said: "Shut up."
The suspect then allegedly asked the elderly woman to urinate in the toilet because he enjoyed the sound. From there, he forced the woman to a bed and raped her, the victim told the police.
The victim recognized the suspect as someone who was regularly seen at a neighbor's home, police said.
However, it was Gino’s mother’s statement that linked him to the crime, prompting investigators to seek a judge’s permission for testing the suspect’s cheek swab, said Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar.
The swab obtained on June 7 was then compared against crime scene evidence. Gino was arrested as soon as the results came back positive, the sheriff said.
"The DNA sampling that we got came to us and it's basically one in 69 sextillion chances that this could be the suspect," Sheriff Salazar said at a press conference.
"The way that it was perpetrated... he seemed very, very comfortable," he added.
Due to the nature of the sexual assault, authorities are urging other potential victims to come forward.
"We felt the need to publicize it (Bononcini's arrest) in the hopes that somebody may have seen him lurking around or know of other attacks he may have been involved in," the sheriff said.
According to his Facebook page, Gino is a native of San Antonio and works at the Methodist Children's Hospital in the city.
