A Texas man allegedly shot his fiance in the face and tried to make it look like a suicide, according to police.
Ty Vaughn, 31, has been arrested and charged with murdering his fiance, 27-year-old Luis Banos Norberto. Police have been investigating the Jan. 14 shooting for months, ABC-13 reported.
During their investigation, police said that Vaughn kept bringing up Norberto's immigration status unprompted. When police searched his phone, according to ABC-13, they found an internet search that stated, "Can I kill an illegal human?"
The station quoted court documents as stating that the two men had been fighting leading up to the incident. Surveillance video placed Vaughn at the home at 4:05 a.m., around the same time neighbors said they heard a gunshot.
At 5:38 a.m. Vaughn called 911. When officers arrived, they found Norberto shot in one of his eyes. He was lying on a bed, and a rifle was propped against one of his arms, the station reported. A torn picture of the couple was found on the floor.
"It happened right next door, and it's even more nerve-wracking that it could happen, and we had no idea it even happened," one neighbor told ABC-13.
ABC-13 interviewed Vaughn in February. When the interviewer offered condolences, Vaughn told the station, "I mean, it is what it is."
