Only days since its production release, the 2012 Tesla Model S has already proved itself a hit amongst customers and industry critics alike. In fact, earlier this month we already reported that the Tesla Model S Signature series was already completely sold out during pre-release reservations.
With a driving range of up to 300 miles from its 85 kWh battery, Tesla is determined to push the envelope of electric propulsion.
However, don't think for a second that all Tesla has got to do now is rest on its laurels. According to MotorAuthority, an innovation from Tesla will soon generate new buzz around the industry.
Compared to the current 240-volt system, which takes around 8 hours to fully charge a 300-mile range battery, an all-new 440-volt fast-charge system from Tesla will potentially fully charge the same battery pack in just an hour. Appropriately given the nickname "Supercharger," Tesla states that the technology will be ready in less than a year.
However, rather than providing the 'Supercharger' to households, the system will be installed in specialized stations installed along high traffic arteries including the I-5 from Los Angeles to San Francisco. No doubt, eastern locations including New York, Boston, and D.C. will get picked up as well.
Those who are only swayed to make an EV purchase by 'Supercharger' availability need not delay. All 85 kWh battery Model S sedans already apply technology compatible with the Tesla 'Supercharger.' Very soon, Model S vehicles using the 60 kWh battery will be compatible as well.
