Teresa Heinz Kerry, 74, the wife of U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, was hospitalized in critical but stable condition Monday, after showing symptoms consistent with a seizure on Sunday, according to a person in close contact with the family.
The person was not authorized to speak publicly about her condition and spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity.
Earlier Sunday, Heinz Kerry was taken by ambulance to Nantucket Cottage Hospital accompanied by Kerry, according to a statement from Glen Johnson, Kerry's spokesman. Noah Brown, a spokesman for the Nantucket hospital, said she arrived in critical condition after 3:30 p.m. ET but was stabilized by doctors.

Once her condition was stabilized, she was transferred to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
"The family is grateful for the outpouring of support it has received and aware of the interest in her condition, but they ask for privacy at this time," Johnson said in the statement.
Before Sunday's emergency, John Kerry had just returned home from a nearly two-week diplomatic trip to the Mideast and Southeast Asia.
He had planned to return to Washington on Monday, before his wife's medical problem, to co-host with Treasury Secretary Jack Lew, high-level strategic and economic talks with senior Chinese officials on Wednesday and Thursday.
Kerry had also spoken of his desire to make his sixth trip to Israel as secretary starting at the end of the week. State Department officials said Kerry's schedule may now change pending developments with his wife's health.
Heinz Kerry is the widow of former U.S. Sen. John Heinz, heir to the Heinz ketchup fortune. She married John Kerry in 1995.
