A teen girl reportedly killed herself due to an inability to get a good night's sleep in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India on Sunday, Sept. 4.
The deceased girl, identified as Kuni Kanhar, a 19-year-old nursing student, was found dead after alleged hanging herself with a noose she attached to the ceiling inside her room in a private hostel at Jamukoli in the Airfield Police Station area on Sunday night, Sept. 4. The teen reportedly left a suicide note at the scene in which she mentioned that she decided to end her life as she has been unable to get sound sleep for the last few days, NDTV reported.
In the letter, the teen did not hold anyone responsible for her death and apologized to her family members and friends for taking the extreme step.
"I am ending my life due to sleep deprivation. No one is responsible for my death," she reportedly wrote.
The teen was reported to have been showing signs of depression over the last few days prior to the incident. According to the hostel's operator, the girl roamed the establishment's premises throughout the night while others were asleep.
Even when the teen tried to sleep, she reportedly often woke up after a few minutes and would remain engrossed with her phone or listening to music till dawn, India Today reported.
The hostel authorities added that they had informed the teen's parents on Saturday night and had asked them to take her home as she was under a lot of mental stress.
"We were told that she was not sleeping well and was wandering in the hostel for the last few nights. The hostel authorities had asked us to take her home and let her live with her family for a few days. We are unable to comprehend why she took the extreme step," the victim's paternal uncle said.
A team of forensic and handwriting experts is examining the contents of the letter to figure out whether the letter was written by her.
Following the incident, the officers registered a case of unnatural death and launched an investigation into the incident.
"We have registered a case of unnatural death. No allegation has been made against anybody as of now. Further investigation is underway," Airfield Police Station Inspector-in-charge Radhakanta Sahu said.
