A teenager suffered critical injuries to his face after he was glassed by a man who thought he was involved in sharing topless photos of his girlfriend.
The suspect, 23-year-old, Arron Kmiotek, of Mirabelle Way, in Nottinghamshire, England, knew the 19-year-old victim from school.
On November 23, 2018, Kmiotek was in the Pavilion Social Club, in Bircotes, when his girlfriend began arguing with the teen.
During the confrontation, the woman, who has not been named, threw a glass of lager over the victim before smashing her glass on a pool table.
The girl’s act prompted bar staff to ask the teen to leave the pub. When he challenged the staff on why they hadn’t asked the woman to leave, Kmiotek walked over and punched the teen with his left hand and hit him with a glass he held in his right hand, Prosecutor Dawn Pritchard told Nottingham Crown Court.
Kmiotek attacked the teen thinking he was friends with someone who had shared the topless photos of his girlfriend.
The attack left the teen with deep cuts to his cheek, nose, and right upper eyelid. The injuries required treatment by specialist surgeons, including 30 stitches. Doctors told the teen he will be scarred for life.
"I've got to live with these scars for the rest of my life," the teen said in a statement, adding he was lucky not to be blinded.
Kmiotek pleaded guilty to unlawfully and maliciously wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, before a trial that was set for May 3.
"What you did was quite frankly awful. It was unprovoked and pre-meditated. You and he are fortunate he wasn’t blinded," Recorder Jason MacAdam told him on Thursday, July 29.
Kmiotek was jailed for two-and-a-half years.
The investigating officer from Nottinghamshire Police, Detective Constable Michael Booth, said: "This was a cowardly attack and it is lucky the victim is not blind as a result of Kmiotek’s inexcusable actions. He will, however, have to carry the scars of this totally unprovoked assault for the rest of his life."
"I am pleased that justice has been done and hope this sentencing will bring some degree of relief to the victim."
"I also think this case should serve as a warning to other people about the serious consequences of being a perpetrator of violence."
"Kmiotek’s actions were entirely unacceptable and such behavior will never be tolerated in Nottinghamshire," Booth said following the sentencing.
