A teacher in Texas has been suspended after lassoing students in his class and the incident is being caught on tape.
A teacher at Schrade Middle School in Rowlett, Texas, allegedly asked for volunteers in his history class to help him explain and demonstrate techniques used to lasso cattle. Students who volunteered agreed to run while the teacher would attempt to lasso them in ... like cattle.
"[The teacher] was visiting with the students, telling the students about how cowboys would corral maverick steer back into the herd," Garland Independent School District spokesman Chris Moore told WFAA News.
One seventh grade volunteer ended up with bruises around his neck from the lassoing. To see a picture of the bruises, click here. The Rowlett Police Department is looking into possible criminal charges against the teacher whose name has not been released
Tristan McKissick, a student in the class was one of the volunteers for the roping activity by the teacher.
"He told me to stand there and take off running, and he was going to rope me," Tristan said. "So he threw it and roped me."
According to McKissick, the activity was done in fun and to entertain the class but even the 13-year-old admitted that maybe it should not have happened.
"He probably shouldn't have done it, but he didn't mean to hurt anyone."
Tristan's father Randy has a different view on the events.
"He shouldn't have done that, but he was just trying to teach them ... to do something different, and I admire that," Randy said.
Garland ISD placed the teacher on administrative leave and he has promised not to lasso anymore children in class again.
"This is not something that we feel was malicious. It was not intent," Moors said. "Extremely unfortunate and extremely poor judgment."
