A teacher was reportedly hospitalized after she was attacked by a rampaging 5-year-old boy at an elementary school in Pembroke Pines, Florida on Wednesday, March. 2.
On Wednesday, March 2, at Pines Lakes Elementary school in Broward County, two unruly students, ages 4 and 5, reportedly started throwing objects around their pre-kindergarten classroom and at their teachers before going on to flip over several chairs. When one of the teachers took the 5-year-old boy into a smaller "cool down" room, the young child then attacked her, leaving her with severe injuries that reportedly needed surgery, Daily News reported.
Following the attack, the teacher got on the school radio and said that she needed help. After her request for help, an officer responded to the scene and found the teacher sitting against a wall "appearing to be in a faint state."
According to a police report, the teacher needed help getting up and was "clearly weak and dazed" as she began coughing and dry heaving. The officers then requested a rescue unit to the school and transported her to Memorial Regional Hospital. However, even though the teacher continued to blink and breathe regularly, she was not able to vocally respond or show signs of response, NBC 6 South Florida reported.
Meanwhile, Broward Teachers Union President Anna Fusco who is representing the teacher, said that the boy continued to attack the teacher even after she was on the floor and had become unresponsive.
"She was caught where he ran and jumped on her and attacked her with his body weight, which caused the severe injury and she will need surgery," Fusco said.
Fusco added that the teacher's injuries were so severe that she had to be intubated at the hospital.
According to Fusco, this marks the third time the teacher was taken from the classroom in an ambulance because of injuries from the same student. In a previous incident, the same student pinned the teacher under a bookcase, due to which she lost consciousness and was treated for a concussion.
Following the incident, the school's principal, Susan Sasse, addressed a message to parents and the staff saying that the campus was secure at all times during the incident.
"As always, the health, safety, and well-being of our students and staff continue to be my highest priority," the principal's message read.
Meanwhile, the Pembroke Pines Police officials confirmed that the student will not be charged with the incident.
