“Fugitivos” is a new show premiering April 6, 2015 on UniMás. The series focuses on the love story between inmates, Julián (Emmanuel Esparza) an innocent man accused of murdering his best friend’s wife, and Esperanza (Taliana Vargas) a woman doing time for murdering the father of her daughter after finding out he was abusing their child. Taliana Vargas gave Latin Times an insight on her character, the production, and what it is to be expected from the show’s first season.

Latin Times: How do you feel to be a part of “Fugitivos?”

Taliana Vargas: It really is one of those opportunities life gives you. You can call it destiny, something that was meant for us to do, just things that make you grow as a person, as a professional in the business, and they also give you this adrenaline that makes you keep wanting to do more. Also just being part of these new series with a cinematic format, and completely transformed when it comes to character plot lines. You ask “How do I feel?” I feel privileged.

LT: What did you have to do to prepare for this role (Esperanza Gómez)?

TV: Well, this character is nothing like me so it took me a few months to be able to enter in her skin and wear her shoes. She is a woman that has been in jail for many years, she killed her daughter’s father when she found out she was abusing her. She is a woman with tough skin, aggressive, hurt, she is hurt but she has no hard feelings or resentment of any kind. She seems to be a tough cookie, but she knows protecting her heart is the most important thing she has to do to survive in prison. She can’t fill her heart anger or hatred. She is a person that shows one thing, but she is not always what she is showing.

LT: What was your biggest challenge during the shooting?

TV: Shooting “Fugitivos” was hard. The episodes are dense and adrenaline driven. They are full of action. I had a rough time with the jail scenes, that feeling of heavy pain that she has. A pain that only a mother would get, and I have no experience with. I would say that was the most complicated thing to tackle: Giving Esperanza life while I was still digging into the character’s emotions.

LT: Did you submit yourself to any physical transformations for the show?

TV: Well, physically, I changed my hair color to rusty red at the ends. I think that style is “IN” for Cali girls but it wasn’t even close to that! It looked old and disheveled. My makeup was that of an ugly woman. They gave me wrinkles, bags under my eyes, thick eyebrows so I can look rougher. I also lost a lot of weight which made me look unhealthy. But I don’t complain because those were all character traits. I real don’t care about physical changes as long as they are giving life to my role.

LT: Is there any funny story or fact that you would like to share with our readers?

TV: Well, I’m still trying to get the red off my hair! (Laughs) But no, I think we all go back to who we really are, we recoup. Emotionally, it was pretty dense. But, I think that’s what actors are all about. It’s like our psychologist, our therapy, playing other lives, and emotions that are far from our reality.

LT: How would you describe “Fugitivos” using only 5 adjectives?

TV: Ay, I don’t know! Help! It’s good! It really is a good show. Action. Drama. It’s entertaining, it keeps your heart pumping. Suspense.

LT: Is there anything you’d like to say to our readers to encourage them to watch “Fugitivos?”

TV: Just emphasize on the new tv show formats on UniMás, they are new, in Spanish. Series with cinematic format and real stories that you can’t miss! You’ll really enjoy them.

LT: Anything else you would like to add?

TV: I just hope everyone will enjoy the show and please keep in touch on Social Media! Tell us if you like it, or don’t like it, or both! My Twitter account is @TalianaV and you can find me on Instagram too. I hope you like it!
