The suspected UnitedHealthcare CEO shooter reportedly suffered from chronic back pain and had gone missing after undergoing spinal surgery.
Luigi Mangione's family reported him missing on Nov. 18 after he stopped answering family members following a back surgery months prior, as reported by the New York Post.
While he was originally from Maryland, Mangione's last known address was in Honolulu, Hawaii. Friend and former roommate RJ Martin told CNN that Mangione told him he was "hoping to get stronger in Hawaii" before moving in.
After the surgery, Mangione sent Martin pictures of the X-rays, which Martin described to CNN as "heinous, with just giant screws going into his spine."
Mangione's reported pain matched up with his reading interests too, as his Goodreads account showed that he had shelved at least six books on chronic pain, at least three of which had to do with back pain, as reported by Newsweek.
Following the surgery, Mangione reportedly stopped answering friends and family, leading his family to reach out to others and forward messages to see if anyone had heard from him.
"He went radio silent in June or July," Martin told the Honolulu Civil Beat.
Mangione, 26, was arrested Monday in connection with the death of CEO Brain Thompson, who was shot and killed in Manhattan last week. He was charged with murder after initially being taken into custody on gun charges.
No posts regarding his health insurance or any connection of his treatments for his back pain related to UnitedHealthcare were discovered in an analysis of his Reddit posts by CNN.
"Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi's arrest. We offer our prayers to the family of Brian Thompson and we ask people to pray for all involved," Mangione's family said in a statement following his arrest.
