For all the pomp and circumstance around the joint hosting of Super Bowl XLVIII between New York and New Jersey, the game itself -- thanks to one prominent television network -- is about to make a major piece of history, even before the ball is put on the tee. Set to be played on Sunday, Feb. 2 from MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, SB XLVIII between the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks will become the first NFL Championship to be broadcast live in Spanish. While fans choosing to watch previous Super Bowls in Spanish have been able to via SAP, the 2014 title match will be available as a single program broadcast in Spanish without having to hit any buttons.
Excited about the opportunity to carry the broadcast on the FOX Deportes network, John Laguna -- who will man the play-by-play duties for Super Bowl XLVIII -- says it is finally time for the National Football League’s biggest game to be available to Spanish-speaking people. “It’s about time the Spanish-speaking people get to watch a Super Bowl without having to hit the SAP button on the remote,” Laguna said. “All the Super Bowls have been broadcast in parts of Latin America, it’s surprising it has taken so long. This should have happened years ago.”
Jeff Krolik, the President of FOX Sports Regional Networks, said this week that the partnership between the NFL and FOX to bring the Super Bowl to viewers in Spanish has been a wonderful occurrence. Hoping that this broadcast helps the FOX Deportes brand stretch on a wider scale – with only 20-percent of all homes in the United States receiving the channel as of August 2013, according to Nielson ratings -- the contest between the high-flying Denver Broncos offense and the shutdown defense of Seattle’s "Legion of Boom" could serve as a big move forward for the FOX Network.
“Being the first U.S. Spanish-language network to broadcast the Super Bowl is a testament to our continuous efforts to strengthen our programming, and further solidify FOX Deportes as the leader in the Latino sports space,” Krolik said. “We are extremely pleased about our new agreement with the NFL.”
Super Bowl XLVIII will be available on the FOX Deportes Network, with coverage beginning Feb. 2 at 6:25 p.m. ET.
