Regarded as the visionary of our time, the late Apple founder Steve Jobs is known for creating innovative products and establishing the company into the forefront of consumer electronics.
During a recent interview at the Fast Company: Innovation Uncensored expo in New York, Apple board member Mickey Drexler revealed fascinating details of Steve Jobs' ambitious dream to venture beyond consumer electronics before he died -- to design an automobile. Unsubstantial rumors of an Apple iCar have existed for quite a while and there were even reports that Steve Jobs met with Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn to elaborate on the idea. Ultimately, an iCar never materialized.
"Look at the car industry, it's a tragedy in America. Who's designing the cars?" Drexler said during the interview. "Steve's dream before he died was to design an iCar and I think it would've been probably 50 percent of the market."
This is quite a bold claim, especially considering a 50 percent figure would amount to almost triple that of GM's current stake in the United States.
Although the iCar never existed as anything more than an idea, a revolutionary vehicle is certainly worth a thought. If rumors of Volkswagen's cooperation were true, the iCar would have competed in a very competitve price range as well. Would you have bought one?
