A young mother was sentenced to prison for failing to seek medical attention for her three-year-old daughter after she was assaulted by her stepfather for wetting the bed.

Authorities sentenced Christopher Anthony Tavares Coelho, 27, and Leticia Lopes Fonseca, 19, to a total of 61 years in prison after killing Ana Livia Lopes da Silva, Fonseca's daughter in Pocos de Caldas, Brazil.

The couple was found guilty of homicide by a jury after 17 long deliberation hours on March 5.

KNewz claimed that Coelho has mercilessly beaten the girl after wetting the bed in June 2018.

Ana, who spent the day with her mother the day after the beating, reportedly complained of pain the next day. Her mother, on the other hand, did not give her any assistance.

Her aunt and grandmother, who served as their family's neighbor, discovered her unconscious.

Ana was admitted to a nearby hospital and was diagnosed with "craniocerebral hemorrhage and fractured ribs," according to reports.

The little girl was moved to Santa Casa de Poços de Caldas due to her burns' severity, where she died.

For murder, Coelho was sentenced to 32 years, one month and twenty days in jail.

Fonseca meanwhile was sentenced to 29 years, two months and 23 days in jail for failure to support her daughter after the beating.

Ana Livia's nursery had previously reported the couple to the authorities in May 2018 for maltreatment.

After their conviction, the couple has been held in preventative custody.

Karla Felisberto, Fonseca's public defender, said her client was sorry for her daughter's death.

Children are among the victims of injustice in Latin America and Brazil. According to Humanium, more than 40% of Brazilian children live in poverty, according to a 2018 survey by the NGO Fundación Abrinq titled "Scenario of Childhood and Adolescence in Brazil."

These troubling figures are accompanied by poverty and family abuse, leaving Brazilian children vulnerable to crime. Apart from murders and other offenses, children in Brazil are also victims of child sexual exploitation, which harms their growth and upbringing.

Humanium noted that, in addition to the crimes that children in Brazil face, the education system has also had difficulty catering to children and young adults.

According to the study, approximately 70% of Brazilian children aged three and under do not have access to public or private daycare centers.

Around 1.6 million students aged 15 to 17 years old, on the other hand, dropped out of school, but the institution did not explain why.
