Entering the 2013-2014 college football season, head coach David Shaw and the Stanford Cardinal were among a handful of teams fans and prognosticators believed would be in the race for a possible National Championship appearance. Following a year where the captured the 2013 Rose Bowl with a tough win over the Wisconsin Badgers, the Cardinal feature an extremely capable roster with talent all over the field. A stout defense is a great support system for rising quarterback Kevin Hogan, who Stanford fans have been more than happy with after parting ways with now-Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck following the 2012 season.

Heading into Week 4, Stanford is a perfect 2-0 thanks to wins over San Jose State and Army. While teams including Washington State, Washington, UCLA, Oregon and Notre Dame lie on the Cardinal schedule, the team's first true test will come at home this weekend against No. 23 Arizona State. The Sun Devils looked solid in a season-opening victory over Sacramento State and extremely physical in last week's 32-30 victory against the Wisconsin Badgers. Head coach Todd Graham and quarterback Taylor Kelly have the Sun Devils as early Pac-12 contenders and a victory over the No. 5 ranked team in the land could solidify Graham's progress as ASU head coach.

"These games are the conference games and are the most important games. At the end of the season, we are going to evaluate how many wins and how many losses you had and whether you won a conference championship. So signature wins and things like that I can tell you that our program is in a position to compete for a championship."

COACH QUOTES - David Shaw, Stanford (2-0, 0-0)

"It's a gantlet," Shaw said recently regarding the lengthy conference schedule. That's the way we look at it. You've got to be able to rise to the occasion, every seven days from now to the end of the season. It's about realizing that every game is important, no one is bigger than another one. You can't slight any opponent. You can't look past any opponent. You have to be strong mentally to come back from a great win, by knowing the season is not over. If you get too excited about the last one, you lose the next one."
