March 17 is St. Patrick’s Day. Although a lot of people go on and indulge in some drinking, we should remember this started as a holiday commemorating a saint. Saint Patrick was a Christian missionary and bishop born in Roman Britain. When he was 16, he was kidnapped by Irish raiders and taken as a slave to Gaelic Ireland. This experience strengthened his faith, as he found God. In a dream, God told him to flee to the coast, and doing so, he escaped from captivity.
Saint Patrick went on to become a priest, and he returned to Ireland to convert the pagan Irish to Christianity. Nowadays, the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day has broadened, including Irish culture. A very popular theme is “The Luck of the Irish.” Although many might think this phrase came to be because the Irish are extremely lucky, its origins are completely opposite. Historically, the Irish lived in land that was taken from them, occupied by the British, the Vikings, and other conquerors. They survived famines, war, starvation, prejudice, poor fortune, bad times, and centuries of losses.
“The Luck of the Irish” is more of an attitude towards life, a positive look at a bad situation. Here are 15 quotes to make you have a positive attitude and feel lucky!
