A Southern California woman and her friend say they were kicked off a Spirit Airlines flight for wearing crop tops, accusing the airline of singling them out and publicly humiliating them.

Tara Kehidi and Teresa Araujo were traveling together from LAX to New Orleans when a male flight attendant allegedly ordered them to "put something on," after they removed their sweaters due to the plane's lack of air conditioning. The women asked to see a dress code, inquiring about the airline's policy regarding crop tops.

One row ahead of them, a woman traveling with her toddler overheard the dispute and spoke up in defense of the other passengers.

"I said 'well, if your body is inappropriate, then so is mine because I also have a crop top under my sweater.' And I took my sweater off and I was like 'so if they're kicking you off the flight, then they're also going to have to kick me and my toddler off of the flight'," Hager told KABC.

The flight attendant escorted all four passengers off the plane, even as they offered to put their sweaters back on.

"We were kind of embarrassed as well, because we felt we were being treated like... like criminals, you know. Everyone in the plane was looking at us," Araujo told KABC.

The two friends did not receive a refund and were forced to spend around $1,000 on a Delta flight to follow through with their plans celebrate Kehidi's 30th birthday.

Eyewitness News received a statement from Spirit Airlines citing their "Contract of Carriage, a document all Guests agree to upon making a reservation with us," which outlines clothing standards.

The contract warns that passengers may be required to deboard without refund if they're "inadequately clothed," or wearing "lewd, obscene, or offensive" clothing.

The women say they are interested in pursuing legal action, while Spirit Airlines told KABC, "We are investigating the matter, and we are in contact with the Guests about their experience."
