Special counsel Jack Smith is reportedly speeding ahead on criminal investigations surrounding Donald Trump that have revolved around the former President’s state of mind following the 2020 Presidential election.
They include what Trump knew about plans to impede the transfer of power following his loss in the election, sources told CNN. Smith, who is in Europe recovering from a biking accident, has made a series of high-profile moves since he was appointed last month. It includes him asking a federal judge to hold Trump in contempt for failing to comply with a subpoena that ordered him to turn over documents that were marked classified.
Since Thanksgiving, the special counsel has brought many close Trump associates before a grand jury in Washington. The list includes three of Trump’s closest aides, his former speechwriter Stephen Miller and two former White House lawyers.
According to sources, 20 prosecutors investigating the Jan. 6 riot and the effort to overturn the 2020 election are in the process of moving to work under Smith. He will also take on national security investigators who are already working on the investigation into the potential mishandling of federal records that were taken to Mar-a-Lago, Florida after Trump left the White House.
Meanwhile, Smith has subpoenaed officials in key presidential swing states for any and all communications involving Trump, his campaign and several allies and aides who helped in his effort to overturn the 2020 election. NBC News reported that subpoenas were issued to top elections officials in Milwaukee and Dane counties, Wisconsin; Wayne County, Michigan; Maricopa County, Arizona; and Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.
The subpoena hints that Smith is investigating a scheme that involved fake electors, people who signed documents purporting that they were their states’ rightful electors and asserted Trump was the winner in their states even though it was Joe Biden who won.
A spokesperson for Milwaukee County Clerk George Christenson confirmed that a subpoena had been sent by Smith's office. The document asked for any and all records of communications from June 1, 2020, to Jan. 20, 2021 with or involving Trump, his campaign and a list of 19 allies and aides. Those allies and aides included campaign lawyers and other attorneys who worked closely on Trump's efforts to overturn his 2020 election defeat. They were names like Sidney Powell, Rudy Giuliani, Justin Clark, Victoria Toensing and Jenna Ellis.
