A Spanish couple has been kidnapped in Colombia while trying to take a romantic getaway. The couple identified as Maria Concepcion Marlaska Sendano and Angel Sanchez Fernandez were kidnapped on Friday May 17. Their car was found damaged and abandoned by the Colombian authorities.
According to BBC the kidnappers contacted the families of the kidnapped Spanish couple claiming respocibility for the act. The kidnappers say they are part of the rebel Colombian group Farc. But the group has not officially claimed responsibility for the act. Last year Farc said it would stop kidnapping locals and tourists.
According to the Associated Press Major Cesar Gonzalez of Colombia's Anti-Kidnapping Unit says the couple was last seen a week ago in the coastal city of Santa Marta. Residents there did not see the Spanish couple and could not offer clues as to what may have happened to them.
Globalpost.com says the Spanish Foreign Minister, José Manuel Garcia-Margallo told reporters that the Spanish government is working closely with the Colombian authorities in order to rescue the kidnapped couple. Garcia-Margallo would not release any further information telling reporters,
"The house rule is to keep absolute discretion [in these cases]."
