A train carrying approximately 240 passengers derailed and caught fire in Spain's Galicia region Wednesday morning. At least 35 are dead in the crash, which caused commuters to be crushed under the train cars, the Guardian reported. The cause of the crash, which occurred in the northern city of Santiago de Compostela, remains unknown, authorities said. Passengers said the train was moving quickly and it felt as though it started to wobble on the tracks.
"It was going so quickly ... It seems that on a curve the train started to twist, and the wagons piled up one on top of the other," passenger Ricardo Montesco told Cadena Ser radio station.
Other witnesses claimed to have heard an explosion shortly before the train went off the tracks. Passengers said they were unaware that the train was on fire until they crawled out from under the wreckage. Some were trapped inside, pinned by the metal cars. Rescuers did not immediately comment on the situation.
