Officials in Spain have announced that a five-month-old baby boy has been killed in what some are calling a "freak accident" at Alicante Airport near the resort town of Denia. The baby's mother, an American was flying into Alicante Airport from London Wednesday night to meet her Canadian husband. The incident happened around 11:30pm local time. The woman placed the baby in his carrier on a stationary luggage conveyer belt. According to reports the weight of the child's carrier started the carousel moving.
As the carrier belt began to move the child became stuck between the rollers in the luggage drop zone. Paramedics rushed to the carousel in an attempt to save the baby boy but he died at the scene. The baby was travelling with his mother and an older sibling. The family was on vacation in Spain. The identities of the child and his family have not yet been released. The mother reportedly placed the child's carrier on a non-moving carousel in order to reach for something she needed. That is when the carrier suddenly began to move.
Despite the reports that the child was place on a stationary conveyer belt the Daily Mail is reporting the child was "dropped" on the belt when his mother climbed onto the carousel. According to the Mail's report the baby's mother was on top of the carousel with the boy in her arms when she dropped him. The Mails report says the five-month-old fell out of his mother's arms and was then dragged across the belt. The Mail says the baby's head was crushed when he became stuck in the space where the two belts meet.
NBC has also reported that the circumstances surrounding the child's death have not been confirmed. An airport worker who said he witnessed the accident said the baby died in his carrier and not because his mother dropped him. The airport worker told his local TV news station, "The mother apparently put him down on the conveyor belt when she went to reach for something." An investigation into the little boy's death is underway. Reports seem to agree that the parents of the dead child will not be facing any charges.
