MIAMI - Jet-setting to Spain, Sofía Vergara kickstarted a whirlwind three-week tour promoting her Netflix series "Griselda," set to debut on January 25. There, she swiftly debunked stereotypes with her razor-sharp wit, leaving audiences spellbound by her beauty and roaring with laughter. More importantly, she shattered the outdated myth that beauty and brains don't mix, leaving onlookers awe-struck.
With her characteristic humor, she delved into the psyche of Griselda Blanco, aka 'La Madrina' (The Godmother), a notorious figure in the world of drug-trafficking—even Pablo Escobar feared her. But there's more; Sofía Vergara transformed an interview in Madrid into an impromptu masterclass on handling belittling questions.
Her bold and unapologetic responses drew parallels to Shakira, another Colombian powerhouse renowned for an unflinching stance against men who underestimate them. Fans are rallying behind this display of assertiveness, cheekily scoring it as Colombia 2 - Spain 0, a reference to Shakira's contentious divorce from former soccer player Gerard Piqué.
Becoming Griselda Blanco
Vergara recounted her acting journey as Griselda as an experience so grueling and fascinating that it caused a back injury, yet she humorously quipped about her struggles to see herself as a true actress.
However, her talent is undeniable, solidifying her status as a top-tier actress, a title she earned along with the hefty paychecks that made her the world's highest-paid TV actress during her "Modern Family" era.
To portray her character as accurately as possible, Vergara had to learn to smoke and sort. "I have never smoked in my life; Andi (Andrés Baiz) taught me to do coke, too," she said with laughter.
She also went through a self-imposed physical change. "I wanted the public to forget about me and forget about Gloria," she said about her character in "Modern Family. Vergara used tight underwear that constrained her movements when walking. She also adopted another posture, which caused a back injury. "I have had three painkilling shots, and I am still suffering," she revealed.
Her transformation included prostheses for the teeth and nose. "It was horrible. When I yelled, the teeth would go flying out of my mouth. I had trouble breathing. "It was a big ordeal," she admitted.
Sofía Vergara in "El Hormiguero"
Most of her interaction with the Spanish press was during a press conference, but previously she had visited the studios of TV giant Antena 3, where she appeared in number-one primetime show "El Hormiguero."
The interview was so powerful that several snippets went viral. When host Pablo Motos tried to make jokes about her accent in English when she said "Modern Family", the reply was swift and clear: "I say it wrong? Oh, because you speak better English than me?," and went on to say, "How many times did they nominate you at the Golden Globes?" Vergara has four Emmy and four Golden Globe nominations.
This episode, which took place less than a year after Shakira's scathing Bizarrap session and other songs targeting her ex-partner, marks another victory for Colombian stars. With Shakira's fearless lyrics and Vergara's sharp-tongued wit at "El Hormiguero," it's clear: Colombia is not just competing; it's leading the charge.
