The Sochi Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony will take place on Feb. 7 commencing at 8:14 p.m., or 20:14. NBC will be providing coverage of the event. The Olympic Opening Ceremony will be hosted by Matt Lauer and Meredith Vieira on Feb. 7, at 7:30 p.m. ET. unfortunately NBC will not be offering online coverage of the Opening Ceremony. “We want to put context to it, with the full pageantry it deserves,” said Mark Lazarus, chairman of NBC Sports Group.
Details of the Sochi Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony have been kept tightly under wraps. There will be almost 6,000 athletes and team members, a record for the Winter Olympics. Reports of ballet, snow machines and avant-garde art have emerged of late. According to the Telegraph, viola player Yuri Bashmet and conductor Valery Gergiev, will appear. Meanwhile, the Moscow Times reports that award winning Russian pianist Denis Matsuev will also be a part of the performance.
There will undoubtedly be some concern over security at the event. Protests against Putin's anti-gay propaganda laws have been ongoing the world over this week: Russia has taken precautions by denying certain activists the vistors passes required for entry into the games. Given the recent spate of terorist attacks in Russia, this will also be a key concern for event organizers. According to Yahoo, "about 40,000 security forces are on guard, standing watch in all corners of Sochi and its Olympic Park on the sea and built-from-scratch mountain ski resort."
