SNL's Californians skit returned last night with guest host Justin Bieber, who played a troubled teen runaway with a skateboard in the recurring skit that we all love to hate. Watch "Saturday Night Live" Californians with Justin Bieber here.
The SNL Californians skit opened on "Saturday Night Live" cast member Fred Armisen and featured player Cecily Strong returning home from lunch. Immediately we hear their annoying Californian accents as they describe the meal they just shared.
Of course, the running joke (if you can call it that) on the SNL Californians skit is that the characters always describe driving directions in extreme details, and withi the first few second Armisen is explaining the route he used to take to meet the restaurants manager for sand sailing.
The couple prepares to head to the bedroom to "make something magic happen," when Bill Hader, who played Armisen's rival in SNL's Californians skit enters the sketch. Hader explains that he forgot his power-saw, and immediately starts describing his own driving directions. Suddenly, Hader realizes he recognizes Armisen's date. It turns out, and it turns out they married, though they've been separated for seven years.
At this point the SNL Californians skit gets ugly, as Armisen yells at Hader to leave before offering him specific directions on how to do so. Then Strong reveals that she talked her her estranged husband yesterday. On that cliff hanger the sketch pretends to end as all three characters inspect themselves in the mirror.
When the SNL Californians returns Hader is gone and Armisen is showing Strong his art, a "sepia charcoal of canyons" he drew. She likes it, calling it "captivating." Suddenly Vanessa Bayer enters the sketch playing a hispanic made and dragging along Justin Bieber, who she found sleeping in the house and suspects is an orphan.
Bieber has finally entered into the SNL Californians skit, and he explains that he's a runaway in a pretty convincing Californians accent. The maid offers to kick Bieber out of the house, but Armisen says no, he want to learn where the boy is "coming from."
When asked what he's running away from, Bieber responds, " I dunno. It's like my dumb parents, like, nobody understands me bro. That's why I totally threw that clay sculpture at my mother. She called the cops on me but... [boring unfunny classic SNL Californians driving directions]... by the time they got there I was already in Venice beach."
Armisen responds that tomorrow Bieber will have to go back home, and suddenyl Bill Hader is back in this SNL Californians sketch. He's creeped up behind the runaway, before offering up Cecily Strong and her car to drive home Bieber. Armisen is suspicious, asking how Hader knows what car she drives (um, they're married?). Everyone looks at the camera, and then into a big mirror, except Bieber, who holds up a smaller mirror of his own. Fake commercial break.
When SNL Californians with Justin Bieber returns the cast has grown to include a lamboyant Taram Killam and a beach bum Kenan Thompson. Everyone but Bieber is holding a glass of wine. Killam really likes the canyon pictures.
"To Stewart," toasts Kenan. "May you sell your paintings to Italian restaurants all over Malibu."
Suddenly the cops (Kate McKinnon and Tim Robinson) show up, crashing the SNL Californians Justin Bieber skit. Turns out they've arrived to question Hader over an illegal U-turn. Again, everyone is shocked. Then the camera keeps cutting to Hader's goofy face, which is actually pretty funny. The end.
