An elderly man, who was reportedly severely sleep-deprived at the time of the attack, has been accused of brutally beating his wife to death using his walking stick on Monday, Oct. 4 in Kerala, India. The man then allegedly proceeded to jump into a well in the backyard of his house in an attempt to kill himself.
In the early hours of Oct. 4, Ramankutty, a resident of Kuravilangad in Kottayam district in Kerala, India, allegedly bludgeoned his wife Bharathi, 82, to death with his walking stick, causing grievous injuries to her head and face, ultimately resulting in her death. Bharathi was found dead in her bed in the early hours of Monday, Onmanorama reported.
Ramankutty had reportedly previously informed his family members about his sleep deprivation issues, claiming they were largely caused by his wife's illness. The police suspect that this could be the reason behind Bharathi's murder. The authorities speculate that Ramankutty killed his wife due to frustration as she kept him awake throughout the night due to her illness.
When the officers questioned him regarding his motive behind the murder, Ramankutty reportedly gave incoherent and contradictory answers to the police.
The autopsy results reportedly revealed that Bharathi had sustained injuries on the head, forehead, and face with a coffee plant branch that Ramankutti used as a walking stick.
After beating his wife to death, Ramankutti reportedly jumped into a well in the backyard of his house in an attempt to commit suicide, but locals managed to save him from drowning.
Ramankutti has been remanded and is in the custody of the Judicial First-Magistrate Court, Pala for 14 days. He was given medical aid since he also suffers from various health issues.
