"There are so many great reasons to be on Signal," he wrote.

"Now including the opportunity for the vice president of the United States of America to randomly add you to a group chat for coordination of sensitive military operations. Don't sleep on this opportunity..." he continued.

Marlinspike is referring to a Signal group chat joined by several senior members of staff within the Trump administration, on which sensitive attack plans were discussed. Editor-in-Chief of The Atlantic, Jeff Goldberg, was added to the group chat by National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, many have presumed by mistake.

The app's President has since defended its safety and security, stating on social media, "Signal is the gold standard in private comms."

Furthermore, the US National Security Council has responded to the fiasco and stated that the text conversation Goldberg demonstrated "appears to be authentic."

Marlinspike founded the app over a decade ago after leaving his position as Head of Product Security at Twitter.

Signal Foundation, a non-profit "with no advertisers or investors, sustained only by the people who use and value it", was founded in 2018.
