It was a tragic Memorial Day weekend for one family. Shavon Carrillo, 31, is divorcing her husband of 12 years. She had moved in with her sister and brother-in-law just a week before she decided that she needed to be in a “better place” with her kids. On Monday night, Carrillo took her .22-caliber rifle, held it firearm level to her sleeping 11-year-old son and told him “I love you” before shooting him in the head.
She intended to shoot her two other kids, ages 2 and 9, who were sleeping in the same room as the older one, and then kill herself. However, her brother-in-law heard the gunshot, and ran to the room where he confronted the distressed woman. He wrestled away the rifle from her and the wounded boy was rushed to University Medical Center Trauma while his mother was transported to Las Vegas Metro police headquarters for questioning.
In the report, Carrillo, who was arrested under the name Shavon Aguilar, told police she had attempted suicide three months prior to the shooting. She also stated she takes methamphetamine because she’s in “extreme amount of stress,” and believes people associated with her husband are following her. Carrillo said a man she identified as “Bobby” came to the residence to pick up money she owed him on Monday. She told police she kept a rifle in the closet because she feared Bobby and got the gun out when he showed up.
She added that after meeting Bobby, she was still afraid and tried to build “enough courage to kill her children and herself,” the report said, because she wanted them all to be in a “better place.” But it was when she saw headlights through the window and heard a car door slam, that she shot the weapon, the report said. Carrillo was lying next to her son in his sleeping bag before she fired. Police were able to locate a .22-caliber rifle and a single tube magazine at the scene.
A judge set $1 million bail for Carrillo. She was charged with attempted murder with a deadly weapon, two counts of child endangerment with mental harm and child abuse with a weapon. As for her son, he’s in extremely critical condition and authorities say they do not expect him to live.
