Riley Breihan, an 11-year-old Florida girl survived a shark attack on Sunday while out on her boogie board. The attack happened at WinterHaven Park in Ponce Inlet, Daytona, Florida. Breihan told Orlando WKMG that she was not concerned about the pain when the shark first bit her. "At first I wasn't thinking about the pain," Breihan said. "I was thinking I got bit by a shark and have to go to the emergency room. Then I felt the sting and it hurt real bad."
Breihan told WKMG that she was standing in knee deep water when she felt something attach and pull at her leg. Two passersby saw the girl struggling with the shark and jumped in to help her. The good Samaritans wrapped the little girl in a towel, got her to their jeep and drove her to the hospital. As Breihan was being examined doctors noticed the girl was bitten twice, once on the leg and once on the ankle. The doctors also noticed the shark left its' victim with a surprise in her leg, a tooth.
As The Inquisitr pointed out, most people have to go to local beach shops to get a souvenir shark tooth. Not only does Riley Breihan have a unique summer souvenir, she has a story of survival to go along with it. "They had to numb me and they had to prick it out," Breihan said to WKMG about how the doctors removed the tooth. Shark attacks have been on the rise this year. Eight people in Hawaii were attacked by sharks. Normally the state sees three or four in a year.
The latest shark attack in Hawaii was fatal. A German tourist lost her life when she encountered a shark while snorkeling. Jana Lutteropp was snorkeling off the coast of Maui when a shark severed her right arm on August 14. Friends swimming nearby rushed Lutteropp to the hospital but after a long battle she died. Breihan was lucky to survive her encounter, but admitted during her interview with WKMG that she is nervous about going back into the water. "I don't think I would go back in the water. I'm going to wait," the pre-teen said. The species of shark that attacked Breihan was not identified.
