Singer Shakira has asked a New York judge to throw out the lawsuit filed by her ex-boyfriend, Antonio de La Rua.
De La Rua, the son of former Argentine President Fernando de la Rua, dated the singer for over ten years until the couple split in 2011. Since their breakup, de La Rua has alleged that he helped shape her brand and that he is responsible for her two biggest hits: "Hips Don't Lie" and "Waka Waka".
Shakira--who has been slapped with a $250 million lawsuit by her ex in in New York, California, Switzerland and the Cayman Islands--insists that her success has nothing to do with him and that she only hired him out of pity. De La Rua was her business partner and strategist, and alleges that he arranged her $300 million deal with LiveNation in 2008. Shakira states that she hired him, despite having no prior experience or knowledge of the music industry, upon his request in 2005.
'I was already a well-known and recognized artist, and my international career was established and solid,' says the singer in an affidavit, according to The New York Daily News.
This isn't the first financial dispute the former couple has been involved in--Shakira filed a $3 million lawsuit on her ex last year claiming that he had 'misappropriated' $3 million of her funds.
He said that he talked her into recording Hips Don't Lie, which she initially 'hated,' and arranged her $300 million deal with LiveNation in 2008.
