Shane Gandee died Monday on a West Virginia back road. The "Buckwild" star was found inside a Ford Bronco stuck in the mud. Though local police are awaiting official autopsy results before offering a statement, it is apparent that Gandee, 21, and fellow occupants David Gandee, 48, Shain's uncle and Donald Myers, 27, died of carbon monoxide poisoning.
When Shain Gandee's SUV got stuck, the muffler became completely submerged in thick muck, unable to expel the dangerous exhaust fumes properly. The carbon-rich exhaust likely backed up through the vehicle's air vents, asphyxiating Shain Gandee and his two passengers as they sat helplessly in the mud hole.
Shain Gandee reportedly left a local bar near Sissonville, W. Va, around 3 a.m. on Monday. Kanawha County Corporal B.D. Humphreys reported that the vehicle was not "damaged ... from an impact, it was just stuck."
"I don't think [carbon monoxide poisoning is] an unreasonable theory."
Gandee's family and co-stars are grieving of the loss, Shae Bradley tweeting in part, "I just don't understand ..."
"Buckwild," the MTV program starring Shain Gandee and his friends, will be suspending production following Gandee's death. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., had previously criticized the program for exploiting "young people, coax[ing] them into displaying shameful behavior" and "profiting from it." He and others had decried the show as embellishing the stereotypes of West Virginians.
