Selena Gomez and Charlie Puth dated for a while in 2016. Although some publications debunked the dating reports at that time, Puth confirmed to Billboard last year that he and the former “Wizards Of Waverly Place” star really dated.
“I don’t kiss and tell, but the only way a song like that can come across as real is if there’s something else going on behind the scenes,” the 27-year-old singer told the publication. “And that’s what was happening (with Gomez). Very short-lived, very small, but very impactful. And it really messed me up.”
He did not directly say it, but he hinted that their relationship didn’t last because Gomez likes someone else. Puth didn’t mention Justin Bieber, but according to the report, he was indeed referring to the “Love Yourself” singer as the other person whom Gomez still has in mind while they’re dating.
“I’m trying to put this the best way possible: It wasn’t like I was the only person on her mind,” he said. “And I think I knew that going in — what I was getting myself into.”
Now he was accused of writing a song about Gomez, and her fans are calling him out for this. He and the actress were in a relationship in the past, but fans didn’t like the fact that he seemingly used the actress/singer for his newly released song titled “I Warned Myself,” and they are furious, as per Hollyscoop via AOL.
Puth’s new track was released on Aug. 21, and it’s about love, lies and secrets. It tells how someone shouldn’t have believed his love’s words because they turned out to be lies and only messed up his heart.
“Do you remember when you told me I don’t have to worry?” Puth’s song lyrics read. “He’s overseas, out on his tour, he’ll be okay without me. You said you had nothing to hide, that you left him long ago, I shoulda known that was a lie.”
These were the specific lines that convinced fans that Puth was talking about Gomez and Bieber. And for writing this track, they concluded that he’s still not over the 27-year-old songstress.
But then again, Puth already explained that the lyrics of “I Warned Myself” simply tells about the vicious cycle of going back to someone while deep down he or she knows that the person isn’t any good for him or her. This clarification refutes the notion that Puth’s song piece is about Gomez.
