As Selena Gomez gets ready to kick of her worldwide “Revival Tour” on May 6 in Las Vegas, the singer has reportedly received not so great news. Seems like a photo of Gomez with the Dalai Lama in 2014 has come back to haunt her, as she was due to perform in the cities of Guangzhou and Shanghai in August, but the dates no longer appear on her official website.
The China based site Shanghaiist reported the rumors were swirling around and says, that if these are true, it means Gomez had to cancel the dates because of the Asian country’s government due to her involvement with the Buddhist leader.
It was two years ago, when the Dalai Lama and Gomez coincided in Vancouver to host the youth convention We Day, and were pictured together during rehearsals. A moment that the singer said at the time left her “speechless.”
If it’s all true, Selena joins a list of celebrities who are also banned from China for showing support or any type of involvement with Tibet, which includes Brad Pitt, Lady Gaga, Alec Baldwin, 50 Cent, most likely Eva Longoria and Akon, amongst others.
This is not the first time something of the sort has happened to the singer; Gomez requested a special visa to perform in Moscow and St. Petersburg in 2013 and was denied, reportedly because the government was afraid she would bring up their anti-gay laws during the concerts. Surely the “Same Old Love” singer is very distraught for having to dissapoint her fans in China, but something like this is totally beyond her control.
To say she’s been having the biggest year of her career could be an understatement. While the singer is getting ready to go on her biggest tour yet, she’s continued to grow up as a fashion icon and feminine role model. She even recently became the most followed person on Instagram in the world, beating out BFF Taylor Swift after gathering as many as 74.7 million followers! When asked what it feels to be the “Queen of Insta” Selena joked, “Oh it feels so great!”
