Seattle School Locked Down After Bullet from Drive-By Shooting Strikes Classroom

A Seattle high school was placed on lockdown after a bullet from a drive-by shooting struck a second-story window, prompting police response, according to a report.

Officers from the Seattle Police Department were dispatched after receiving multiple reports of gunfire near Nova High School Thursday afternoon, Kiro 7 News reported.

At around 1:44 p.m. around six to seven shots were fired from a vehicle believed to be driving down East Cherry Street near the school, according to police. Witnesses reported seeing two vehicles fleeing the scene.

The bullet that struck the suspected classroom window was believed to come from a .45 caliber weapon. The shooting led to an immediate lockdown of the school and a "shelter in place" order was given to Garfield High School due to its proximity to the site.

As investigators combed through the site, they found more than a dozen shell casings nearby.

"Some kids were banging on the door kind of frantically," Maurice Taylor, a teacher's aide at the school told the CBS affiliate. "We let them in and they said somebody was shooting and then it went through one of the windows."

Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Police are working to determine whether the school was a target or if the shooting was part of a dispute between individuals in the area.

"At this point in time, we don't know whether or not the individuals involved were shooting at each other or shooting at the school," Detective Eric Munoz of the Seattle Police Department told the outlet.
