It’s Pride month and these news couldn’t come in at a better time! Gay rights supporters all over the country are celebrating this historic event. The Supreme Court ruled Friday that states cannot ban same-sex marriage, establishing a new civil right and handing gay rights advocates a victory that has taken a long time to be achieved.
Sources reported it was a 5-4 decision, Justices Stephen Breyer, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor joined Anthony Kennedy’s majority opinion. Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito wrote their own dissents. As recently as 2004, marriage equality was legal in just one state. As of this morning, that number is now 50.
LGBT and Civil rights supporters are not the only ones showing their excitement on social media, celebrities, gay and straight, are also expressing their joy on Twitter using the hashtags #SCOTUS, #SCOTUSMarriage, #LoveWins, and #marriageequality. Congratulations America! …It’s about time!
