Back in May, Scion confirmed the production of the Toyota GT86 convertible for early 2014. A perfect addition to the coupe, the GT86 convertible is expected to give the long-time category benchmark Mazda MX-5 Miata a run for its money. If the critical acclaim the coupe has already received is anything to go by, the GT86 convertible should be sensational.

Unfortunately, a report from Automotive News has revealed that the global release of the convertible will not apply for the North American market Scion FR-S.

According to the article, the coupe was aimed to hit the market at just under $25,000. However, given the costs aond complexities of a drop-top mechanism, Toyota is concerned that the extra premium tacked ont he price tag may be just a little too much to gain much success in the American market.

Subaru has yet to confirm its plans for a BRZ drop top. However, given the premium already applied to the BRZ coupe, a slightly more expensive drop top may be feasible for the Japanese automaker.

If given the green light, the BRZ convertible will be the very first drop top produced by Subaru. The 1984 Subaru GL Convertible was a specialty vehicle prepped by an aftermarket company.
