ABC has revealed that the hit political drama "Scandal" will return for a sixth season. Unfortunately, fans will have to wait a bit longer than expected to see the new season as it will not return for its normal fall premiere due to star Kerry Washington's pregnancy. So what is in store for viewers when the series returns? According to showrunner Shonda Rhimes, the sixth season will be much more optimistic.
Season 5 had a lot of dark moments including Olivia (Washington) murdering Andrew Nichols (Jon Tenney) and not feeling any remorse. According to Entertainment Weekly, Rhimes shared at the Vulture Festival that she "thought the reaction was going to be so much stronger" to Olivia receiving an abortion in the mid-season finale "Baby, It's Cold Outside."
Rhimes further went on to talk the darkness in Season 5 and how Season 6 will see the introduction of some optimism.
"I don’t know if you all will notice this — because Olivia beats people to death with chairs and stuff — but I feel like I can see it," said Rhimes. "There’s an optimism that exists in the work now. I think it’s especially true in Grey’s [Anatomy]. On Grey’s, there’s definitely a sense of optimism. And on Scandal, we’re heading some place that’s optimistic."
Meanwhile, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter the showrunner squashed any rumors that Tony Goldwyn would be leaving and talked Fitz's story arc in the coming sixth season. "I can't tell you any of that — but there is a plan," she said. "Tony is not going anywhere; where would he go?!"
"Scandal's" sixth season will only have 16 episodes as opposed to the usual 22 and will arrive for a midseason premiere.
If you missed any of the juicy details from Season 5 of "Scandal" there is no need to worry as the entire fifth season will arrive on Netflix June 11.
