A Saudi man was arrested at the Detroit Metropolitan Airport by the FBI after lying about his reasons for traveling with a pressure cooker. The Saudi man, identified as Hussain Al Kwawahir, is currently being held in Detroit due to allegations that he lied to Customs and Border Protection agents regarding his reason for traveling with a pressure cooker. Al Kwawahir was also held because he was using a passport with a missing page.
According to ABC News, "A criminal complaint says Al Kwawahir arrived at the airport Saturday on a flight from Saudi Arabia via Amsterdam. The complaint says Al Kwawahir told agents he was visiting his nephew, who he said is a student at the University of Toledo in Ohio."
The complaint continued and discussed allegations of Al Kwawahir's reasons for traveling with a pressure cooker. The Saudi student stated that he decided to travel with a pressure cooker because they weren't sold in America. Then apparently his story changed, and he later said his nephew had bought one but it "was cheap" and broke after one use.
Federal agents also noticed a missing page from Al Kwawahir's passport, issued from Saudi Arabia. According to the complaint, Al Kwawahir stated that he had no knowledge of a missing page and that he kept his passport in a locked box that only he, his wife and three children can access.
Al Kwawahir was read his Miranda rights, which he said he understood, and he invoked his right to remain silent.
FBI authorities confirmed that shrapnel-packed pressure-cooker bombs were used in the April 15, Boston Marathon Bombings.
