Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson might have divorced more than two decades ago but they remain close friends and supportive parents to their two daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie. While their marriage did not last, Fergie still can’t believe the Duke of York chose to marry her instead of someone else.

“Why did Prince Andrew marry me, he could have married a lovely model, he had hundreds of models chasing him, but he married funny old me and that’s because it was meant to be,” Ferguson reflected years later according to Express.

Indeed, Andrew could have had any girl he wanted at that point. When Prince Charles married Princess Diana in 1981, Andrew became England’s most eligible bachelor because his older brother was then off the market for the ladies.

In 1982, Andrew even spawned a phenomenon in Britain aptly called “Andymania,” which was likened to Beatlemania when the British band rose to international stardom. At the time, the young prince was still the second-in-line to the throne and looked heroic being fresh from the Falklands War.

Understandably, his appeal to the ladies was at an all-time high. When he made a public appearance in December that year, he caused near hysteria among the tightly-packed crown as girls started screaming; some of whom even fainted.

After the incident, Andrew got a new moniker as people jokingly said that his HRH title actually meant “His Royal Heartthrob.” He had a party-boy reputation and was even linked to actress Angie Everhart and Kylie Minogue, according to CheatSheet.

Yet, the prince chose her and not all the models he previously dated, which was overwhelming to Ferguson who was already smitten by her man. “All I knew is that I would go anywhere for love,” the Duchess of York once said. “I so believe in romance and that wonderful moment where you fall in love and you are just so with your man that you are like under the skin.”

Unfortunately, their marriage did not last. Everything went south when Ferguson was involved in that toe-sucking scandal with her American financial advisor, which resulted in their divorce in 1996.

But, the ex-couple has since patched up and back to being good friends that they even sparked rumors that they might remarry. While they remain divorced, they still act like one happy family and can be seen going out with their daughter Beatrice and Eugene in public events.
