The Gallos Blancos de Querétaro host Santos Laguna at La Corregidora on Sunday evening for the first leg of the Liga MX quarterfinal playoff. Querétaro comes into the playoffs at the penultimate spot, with 25 points, to face off against a Santos team which finished second only to mighty America, with 33 points. The Gallos Blancos will join the rest of the world in trying to figure out how to stop Oribe Peralta, who notched nine goals for Santos Laguna in the regular season and fired five past New Zealand in World Cup qualifiers. The 2012 Clausura winners have a superb assist leader in Colombian Carlos Darwin Quintero, who had eight this year, to match the scoring prowess of Peralta. The Gallos Blancos will enter as a considerable underdog, as they're not even supposed to be in the top division - after being relegated after last year's Clausura, the Jaguares de Chiapas were sold by TV Azteca and moved to Querétaro, which combined with a shuffling of other Liga MX clubs, resulted in their return to the top division. SBI.net notes that they do have a couple international players who could prove troublesome for Santos Laguna: strikers Chilean Esteban Paredes and Colombian Wilberto Cosme, who together have scored 12 of the team's 20 goals.
Santos manager Caixinha will start Iván Estrada, Rafael Figueroa, Osmar Mares, Felipe Baloy, Marc Crosas, Néstor Calderón, Rodolfo Salinas, Carlos Darwin Quintero, Hérculez Gómez, and Oribe Peralta. Querétaro's lineup will see Sergio García, Dionicio Escalante, Apodi, Mario Osuna, Oswaldo Henríquez, Diego de la Torre, Pablo Gabas, Marco Jiménez, Amaury Escoto, Wilberto Cosme and Julio Nava under the direction of manager Marco Ignacio Ambriz.
