San Diego Mother Contracts Covid-19 After Receiving Moderna Vaccine

In a "breakthrough case", a San Diego mother of two tested positive for Covid-19 despite getting both shots of the Moderna vaccine.

Amber Delecce-Forge, the swimsuit line owner of PQ Swim, got fully vaccinated with Moderna in February.

"It was shocking. I didn’t think it could happen to me," she told CBS 8.

"I've been vaccinated for five months," Delecce-Forge said.

The entrepreneur said she noticed symptoms after her trip to Miami for a swimsuit show with her daughter.

"I lost my sense of taste and smell," she said.

During the pandemic, Delecce-Forge and her team were actively involved and made masks for workers at hospitals, nursing homes, and schools using leftover Lycra. She now continues to be in quarantine at her home.

"This has become my whole world- this guest bedroom," Delecce-Forge said.

The chances for the occurrence of such “breakthrough cases” where the virus breaks through the vaccine's protection are extremely rare, Dr. Abisole Olulademd with Sharp Hospital in San Diego said.

"In terms of statistics, there are only 00.395% of breakthrough cases. That is so small. If you are unvaccinated, get a vaccine as soon as possible, you're risk now is higher," said Dr. Olulademd. "This is not unexpected. There is no vaccine that is 100%."

Delecce-Forge said she is grateful she got vaccinated.

"I would 100% advise to get vaccinated. I feel more secure and will not end up in the hospital and not end up going to die," said Delecce-Forge.

She urges the public to follow the safety measures even if they are vaccinated. She reminded everyone to wash their hands, maintain social distance and wear a mask.

Medical experts are raising concerns as the number of fresh cases of infected patients continues to increase in San Diego County.

The county is "now seeing about double the number of cases that were being reported a month ago," Dr. Wilma Wooten, county public health officer, said.

"We expect further increases in ICU admissions since they lag behind the trend in cases and hospitalizations," Wooten added.
