While the first six weeks of the 2013 NFL season have surely provided fans with loads of excitement, a lot remains unclear in multiple divisions since some teams have either distanced themselves from the early pack or played down to the lowly level of their opponents. Teams like the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs continue to win games with consistency on both sides of the football while others -- including the Washington Redskins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New York Giants and others -- can't seem to find ways to win while nearly playing themselves out of any potential playoff races that may grow throughout the season.
Another team off to a great start are the Indianapolis Colts. Led by quarterback Andrew Luck (97-156 passing, 1,144 yards and 7 TD's), the Colts currently pace the AFC South division with a record of 4-1. Despite the fact that Indianapolis remain one of the most balanced teams -- since they're currently fourth in rushing yards per game and fifth in opposing passing yards -- the Colts know their next contest against the 2-3 San Diego Chargers won't be easy, especially since San Diego is in desperate need of a win in order to have any chance of remaining in contention with undefeated AFC West leaders Denver and Kansas City. Head coach Chuck Pagano continuously reminds his team that the season is still young and it's too early to start thinking ahead, even if the Colts are in first place.
"I don't think you'll see any of these guys walk around with their chest puffed out like a robin, walking around the yard after a big rain storm," the second year Indy coach said. "We're not going there. We'll keep reminding them it's a short ride from the penthouse to the outhouse."
Coming off a 34-28 home victory over the Seattle Seahawks, the Colts are now prepared to take on a Chargers team that ranks third in passing yards, but is near the bottom of the league when it comes to rushing yards (91.2 ypg), opponents passing yards (288.8 ypg) and opponents rushing yards (117.2 ypg).
Closing out Week 6 of the season after dropping a 27-17 decision to the Oakland Raiders a week ago, Chargers head coach Mike McCoy knows his team will need a complete effort in all phases of the game to upend Indianapolis.
"We'll take the best guys we have every week and we have to do a better job on game days following the game plan and creating good battles against the opponent," McCoy said. "It will take a complete effort from the 11 on the field to win this week."
