The Samsung Galaxy S5 spec rumor mill has been swirling for weeks now. While in the beginning we heard that the Samsung Galaxy S5 would have an all metal aluminum uni-body, we have received some more concrete spec details, although the new-generation is still in its early design stage.
As opposed to previous rumors from Design 3.0 that stated the Galaxy S5 would have an all-metal aluminum body, the Galaxy S5 will have a carbon fiber body. It seems plausible that the traditional plastic body of the Galaxy S4 would be replaced by a carbon fiber design due to Samsung’s recent acquisition of half the shares of SGL group. The SGL group is one of the world's leading manufacturers of carbon based products.
In a statement from both SGL and Samsung, the companies acknowledge the benefits of not only partnership but the use of carbon filter in a variety of Samsung devices. “The cooperation is expected to provide a stable long-term supply of carbon fiber materials for Samsung and promote its use in various Samsung products and applications such as consumer electronics, medical devices and engineering applications.”
Samsung also revealed in company statements that the use of the carbon body was being considered for Samsung devices. Yoosung Chung, President and CEO of Samsung Petrochemical mentioned that "Lightweight materials have become an important factor not only in industrial applications but also the consumer end markets such as digital media".
The website specifically dedicated to the Samsung Galaxy S5 listed multiple advantages to using a carbon fiber body. When using the carbon fiber body, Samsung states that “the smartphone will become light in weight” and easy to operate, use and carry. The new body will also provide the next-gen with a shiny and premium look will also being strong due to the strength of carbon. Lastly, Samsung stated that using the new body, the smartphone “can be molded into any design and shape, thus we can expect unique and attractive design features for the device.”
As for more specs regarding design and features, iDigitalTimes reported on some concepts from Bob Freking, a designer. Freking suggests that the device will run Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie. This seems plausible, with Key Lime Pie likely to come out in October, its inclusion is more than likely. He also believes the Galaxy S5 will have “a 5-inch 1080 P Super AMOLED Plus display with on-screen buttons rather than the physical home button that the Samsung Galaxy line normally has.”
As for connectivity, Freking believes that the Galaxy S5 will have the super-fast 4G LTE capabilities. AT&T and Verizon have both spoken of bringing the LTE capabilities to the US, so this seems likely to be included. However, as for 5G capabilities, we are not so sure. Samsung has experimented with 5G and their super-flexible screens and is not nearly ready for commercial use. Due to the rumored release date of the Galaxy S5 at some point during 2014, and 5G capabilities not being perfected till about 2020, this does not seem to be a plausible feature.
I would feel confident stating that the Samsung Galaxy S5 will possess a carbon fiber body design in addition the processor will outperform the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800, as for the rest of the specs too much is still unknown. What do you think of these speculated Samsung Galaxy S5 specs?
