An entire house burned down in Hong Kong when Samsung Galaxy S4 exploded, according to the resident, identified only as "Du."
He said that his phone overheated while he was playing the game "Love Machine." Du claims he heard a loud pop coming from the phone battery and the Samsung Galaxy S4 exploded in his hands.
The man instinctively threw the device onto his sofa, which immediately burst into flames that spread and basically destroyed his house. He and his wife were able to escape without injury, but Du suffered minor burns.
Several smartphone accidents have been reported, and many are caused by improper additions, like replacement batteries or knock-off chargers. In this case Du says that his phone, battery and charger were all the legitimate Samsung products.
Samsung Hong Kong immediately reacted by conducting its own investigation into the incident. The company plans to analyze the chemicals present in the scene to find out if the device is to be fully blamed for the fire. They are looking if any of the chemicals identified in the site could have possibly come from the battery of the unit.
This is not the first report of an injury caused by a Samsung smartphone. An 18-year-old Swiss woman claimed earlier this month that her Samsung Galaxy S3 exploded while she carried it in her pocket, causing her third-degree burns. Also, in 2012 a Dublin man stated his Galaxy S3 was sitting on the dashboard of his car when it caught fire.
However, those particular incidents were caused by unofficial products being used with the phone.
Besides Samsung, iPhone has also made headlines after a woman in China was killed when an electric shock emerged from her iPhone5 as she answered the call while the device was charging. In a related incident, a Chinese man fell into a coma following similar circumstances.
It was later revealed that the phone chargers they were using were not manufactured by the company.
Many cellphone providers are encouraging their customers to buy original pieces and accessories for their devices to avoid other incidents.
