Alright, alright it’s finally here! After months of speculation, Samsung has unveiled its new Galaxy Gear smartwatch, alongside a “slimmer, lighter and faster” Galaxy note 3 phablet. Samsung’s CEO JK Shin first announced the new Galaxy note 3 at a conference in Berlin, saying “for the first time we have given Galaxy Note 3 a warm texture-touch cover. It's slimmer, lighter, and more powerful and all in a beautiful design.” Then Shin was seemingly interrupted as he told the crowd he was getting a call but he quickly smirked and sneakily unveiled an orange banded smartwatch. He told the astonished crowd that the Galaxy note 3 is powered by the Galaxy Gear and believes the sleek design will make the smartwatch a “fashion statement.”
"I believe it will become a new fashion icon around the world," said Shin, after confirming that the device would let users make and receive calls, notify people about their SMS updates, and snap photos.
The sleek technologically advanced wrist watch has a square touch screen, it syncs with a smartphone and users than have the ability to run Android apps, make phone calls and access the Internet all from their wrist! The display of the much anticipated Galaxy Gear smartwatch is a 1.63-inch SuperAMOLED display, 800 MHz processor, 1.9 Megapixel camera, sound and shot 720p video recording, 4GB internal memory and an impressive 25 hour battery life on a single charge. The soon-to-be fashion statement comes in six colors, and will be available on September 25 and at the price of $299 in the U.S.
Samsung did admit that the smartwatch was designed to be used in tandem with the new Note 3, however, software upgrades from both the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S3 will allow the user to use the accessory with their current model smartphone. The smartwatch, which is the first of its kind, the Galaxy Gear also seems to considered the rival to other smartphone accessories, specifically Google Glass. Pranav Mistry, head of Samsung Research America said this made the watch more natural to use unlike “speaking into the air like with Google Glass.”
The smartwatch is frankly an impressive feat for Samsung, the wrist accessory responds to voice commands and when a wearer wants to answer a call, they can raise the watch to their ear. The design of the watch seems to be the most intuitive, with the speaker and microphone are positioned so it can be used like a regular phone. In addition, the camera is positioned on the outside of the strap and Mistry said photos can be taken by pointing and shooting after a simple swipe of the screen.
