California police arrested a 27-year-old male suspect on Tuesday linked to the mass shooting in Sacramento over the weekend which left six people dead and 12 injured. Smiley Allen Martin, is the second individual linked to the incident and was arrested a day after cops apprehended his brother Dandrae Stephan Martin.
According to The Sacramento Bee, Sacramento police consider both brothers as “related suspects” and will hold them in custody without bail at the Sacramento County Main Jail. The brothers are facing a weapons charge as well as separate counts of assault with a deadly weapon.
Smiley was receiving medical treatment for serious injuries from the onslaught of gunfire during the incident when he was arrested. He is under police supervision while recovering at the hospital. He is being charged with possession of a machine gun after officers confirmed the machine gun was found at the scene on Sunday. The weapon was a modified handgun converted to have automatic weapon functionality.
“Once Smiley Martin’s medical care has been completed and he is determined to be fit for incarceration, he will be booked at the Sacramento County Main Jail for possession of a firearm by a prohibited person and possession of a machine gun,” the police statement said.
A 15-minute Facebook Live video was posted by Smiley on Saturday night, hours before the shooting where he appeared to be brandishing a semi-automatic handgun at the camera. Both brothers have a lengthy and grisly criminal background involving violent crimes.
Court documents obtained by the media made light of a release opposed by the DA’s office last year after Smiley was handed a 10-year prison term in 2018 by the Sacramento Superior Court in a case that involved Smiley forcing his way into his girlfriend’s home and violently beating her with a closed fist and assaulting her with a belt. Investigators also found how he had been pimping out his own girlfriend to different clients.
The two-page letter written by Deputy District Attorney Danielle Abildgaard addressed to the Board of Parole Hearings on April 2021 clearly stated the DA’s strong opposing stand on his release. “Inmate Martin’s criminal conduct is violent and lengthy.” the letter reads.
Smiley was recently released from prison on probation in February and Dandrae is due to appear in court on April 26.
Meanwhile, police have received over a hundred videos and photos taken during the incident leading them to execute search warrants on three homes. Officials are still trying to determine if the shooting was sparked by a fight outside the club or from a gunfight in the streets near the state capitol.
