Ukraine’s military has claimed that a Russian commander has killed himself after finding that the tanks being used for the invasion have been stripped of their working parts, as Russia promises to stop bombing Kyiv in order to put more credibility to their peace talks.
Russia’s 4th Panzer Division reportedly suffered a heavy loss of equipment to the point where they had to get suboptimal parts from an airport 21 miles from the border. Some of the tanks were even stripped of their engines and were basically non-functional, according to the New York Post.
“[They] found out that out of 10 ‘canned’ tanks, only one is in a more or less operational condition. The rest are completely dismantled. Some of them don’t even have engines!” the Land Forces of Ukraine said.
The loss of viable tank equipment has been so bad that the commander of the 1st Panzer Army was removed for the huge losses suffered by the military, while a commander of the 4th Panzer Division reportedly shot himself when he found out about the loss of equipment.
“It was impossible for the Russian leadership to turn a blind eye to poor command of the troops,” Ukraine’s Defense Ministry said.
Meanwhile, as the Russian invasion of Ukraine continues, Russia has promised to stop bombing the capital city of Kyiv in an effort to help out peace talks happening between the two countries, although Western intelligence has said that Russia’s efforts to take Kyiv has stalled regardless, CNN reported.
As Kyiv successfully repels Russian forces away from the capital, the Russian defense ministry has said that they have “radically, at times, reduce military activity” in Kyiv and Chernihiv as rumors of failing equipment and stalled progress on the Northern front continue.
Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence Agency has also said that Russia is changing tactics due to the belief that installing a new Ukrainian government now would be impossible, focusing more on the gains made in the south and the east of the country in an effort to divide the land.
“There is reason to believe that he is considering a 'Korean' scenario for Ukraine,” Brig. Gen. Kyrylo Budanov said. “That is, [Russian forces] will try to impose a dividing line between the unoccupied and occupied regions of our country. In fact, it is an attempt to create North and South Korea in Ukraine.”
