There is word that US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi is planning to go to Taiwan, a plan that has allegedly infuriated China.
The alleged visit has also left the White House with a big headache. Tensions are high between Washington and Beijing, ahead of a much-anticipated phone call between US President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
China considers Taiwan a breakaway province that must become part of the country. They have also not ruled out the possibility of using force to achieve this.
So far, the Biden administration has reportedly tried to dissuade Pelosi from going to Taiwan.
It also comes not long after Biden said that the military thinks that Pelosi’s trip is not a good idea. However, he also said that the Chinese rhetoric against any such trip was unhelpful and not necessary.
As of this writing, Pelosi has not formally announced plans to travel. The US approach to Taiwan also remains unchanged.
The US still holds a robust, unofficial relationship with Taiwan while also holding diplomatic ties with China.
Pelosi has been a vocal critic of China and has denounced its human rights record. She has also met with pro-democracy dissidents, and also visited Tiananmen Square to commemorate victims of the 1989 massacre.
The original plan was for the California Democrat to visit Taiwan in April. That did not push through after Pelosi tested positive for COVID-19.
She has so far kept the details of the trip under wraps. However, Pelosi also said that it was important for them to show support for Taiwan.
Such has led Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian to warn his country would take firm and resolute measures if Pelosi pushed ahead with her visit to Taiwan.
“The US will be responsible for all of the serious consequences," Zhao said.
