Safe Energy, a light fixture company on South Street, East Garden City in Long Island, was the scene of a horrific crime this morning around 10 a.m. According to police, a 63-year-old Asian man who used to work for the company arrived at the office and opened fire inside, shooting two people. One of the victims died from their wounds and the condition of the surviving victim is unknown. Nassau County Police said that the gunman was approximately 6-foot-2 and was dressed in a red shirt. The perpetrator ran out of the office building and fled in a white Honda Pilot with plates registered under FMA 3648.
The area is now on edge as cops hunt for the shooter. The nearby shopping center, Roosevelt Field Mall, was placed on lockdown as a precaution. Shoppers weren't being allowed into the building, a spokesperson said, and anyone already inside has been told to stay put as police look for the shooter. Garden City schools were also placed on lockdown, not allowing any unauthorized people inside the buildings as a precaution, school officials said. Surrounding streets have also been blocked off.
The mall left the following message on its Facebook page: "Per direction from Nassau County Police Department, Roosevelt Field is on lockdown and no shopper access is being permitted into the property doors at this time, due to an emergency off property in the nearby East Garden City. The mall has not been evacuated at this time. Stay tuned to Facebook and Twitter for updates." However, Nassau police began allowing customers and employees to leave Roosevelt Field, the mall tweeted at just past 1 p.m. Entrance to the mall is still not permitted at this time, it said.
Police now know who the shooter was, and are searching for the suspect, Sang Ho Kim, Nassau police Chief Steven Skrynecki said at an afternoon news conference. The search, which included Garden City police and a helicopter, involved closing several streets near the East Garden City mall and restricting access to nearby schools in the Garden City district, the Nassau Community College campus and the mall itself. So far, the suspect's whereabouts is still unknown.
