Rita Morena is unstoppable and has booked a new NBC comedy pilot produced by "Parks & Recreation" star Amy Poehler. The 82-year-old Puerto Rican actress has landed a co-starring role in "Old Soul" that centers on a reform wild child who has a business caring for the elderly," according to Deadline. Natasha Lyonne is set to star as Nadia the caretaker that befriends Rita, played by Moreno. The role was tailored for Rita and her character is described as a sexy old gal, a ball of joy, flamboyant and Broadway vet who has been happily married to her writing partner for over 50 years.
The legendary actress is best known for her work in the "West Side Story" musical, and was recently honored with a Lifetime Achievement recognition during the 2014 Screen Actors Guild Awards. Morgan Freeman presented the award to the actress making note she is part of the EGOT elite, those who have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and a Tony. Moreno received her Academy Award in 1961 for Best Supporting Actress in the film adaptation of "West Side Story" where she played Anita del Carmen. In 1972, she won a Grammy for Best Recording for Children when she was part of The Electric Company. The Tony Award came in 1975 for Best Featured or Supporting Actress in a Play for "The Ritz" and finally her Emmy in 1977 when she performed on "The Muppet Show."
"I'm breathless, bloody happy," she said including an expletive which she was not sorry for saying on live television during her acceptance speech. "I was 31 when recognized with an Oscar and only said 'I can't believe it and leave you with that.'" Now comes this honor at 82. Hopefully it is early in the third act of my life.
