The 16-year-old suspect in the rape of a woman onboard a Rio de Janeiro bus turned himself into police on Tuesday, the BBC reports.
The rape occurred on Friday May 3. The 16-year-old was high on cocaine when he boarded the bus and robbed passengers at gun point. The 16-year-old assailant told the bus driver to keep driving and not make any stops. After robbing the passengers the teen raped a 30-year-old woman riding on the bus. Her ordeal took 30-minutes and was captured by surveillance cameras.
The 16-year-old rapist turned himself into police saying he regretted his actions and blamed the rape on his cocaine addiction.
Sexual assaults in Rio de Janeiro are a large concern for authorities in the region. The constant attacks have people concerned about the safety of the city when it hosts the World Cup and the 2016 Olympics.
Late last March an American woman was visiting Rio de Janeiro with her French boyfriend. While the couple was traveling on a bus three men armed with guns boarded and robbed the passengers.
After beating up the American woman's boyfriend the armed robbers turned their attention on her. The 21-year-old American tourist was raped for 6-hours. The Daily Mail reports that the assailants took turns raping the woman, all the while the bus was in motion.
Before her attackers would let the victim or her boyfriend go they demanded the couple withdraw money from an ATM.
According to presstv.ir three men suspected in the rape of the American woman have been arrested. The police were able to figure out who the men were based on bank transactions and receipts.
Alexandre Braga is the police chief in Rio de Janeiro, he told presstv.ir,
"We identified the places and sent out teams of police where we obtained even more information about the suspects' physical characteristics and then a little while after their identity."
