The Premio Lo Nuestro are finally here, and although we might see many familiar faces, there’s one that might not necessarily ring a bell, although most likely you’ll have listened to one of his songs. His name is Rigú, and this charismatic Venezuelan singer-songwriter received three nominations for the award show in the following categories: New Artist of the Year, Pop Album of the Year, for his debut album “Entre Venas” and Pop Male Artist of the Year. This makes Rigú the most nominated new artist this year and shares these categories with some of the industry's biggest names.

This comes as a great achievement for Rigú, who launched his career appealing to the Hispanic market in the US and is finally bringing his music to Latin America, starting with Mexico. Rigú discovered his musical talent at a very early age. He is a self-taught musician who has performed successfully in Venezuelan bands since he was six years old. Through the years, Rigú has shown his versatility as an artist thanks to being part of several groups with different music styles ranging from merengue, salsa, pop to even folk. This has allowed him to create a unique sound which is reflected in his two singles “Contigo Quiero Estar” and “Y es que la quiero.”

Ahead of his big debut walking the red carpet at the Premio Lo Nuestro, Rigú sat down with Latin Times to talk about his nominations, and this whirlwind that has been breaking into the music business.

First of all, congratulations on your nomination to Premio Lo Nuestro. How does it feel to be a new artists and all of the sudden be nominated to important and influential award shows like this?

“For me it’s a blessing that God allows me to live such amazing things, and get three nominations at the beginning of my career in such important awards. You can’t imagine how happy I am. That day when I heard I got the first nomination it was already too much. And when I was told I had two more, the truth is I couldn’t believe it. I’m so thankful to God and Premio Lo Nuestro for taking me and my music into consideration and this is a new commitment to show people my music and composition and it’s a great step into my breakthrough as an artist.”

What do you think has been the key to your success?

“Everything I do I commend it to God, and the rest I think has been the fact that I’m very real. I think people are identifying with my lyrics and they have made my songwriting a part of their lives. I get so many messages of people who tell me they dedicate my songs to their significant others and have even proposed with my song ‘Contigo Quiero Estar,’ and when I started noticing those things, it really made my work all worth it.”

What inspires you to write your songs?

“Right now, as a songwriter, I take advantage of the moments when I’m full of emotions. It can be a lot of happiness or a lot of sadness. And I think that inspiration comes from whatever my heart is feeling and it’s so strong that sometimes when I’m writing I tear up and start crying. I think my lyrics are so sincere and so real because I relieve everything as I write.”

Which artist would you like to collaborate with in the future?

“Anyone who wants to work with me and join this ‘Rigú project’ is more than welcomed! But I would really like to collaborate with those artists that I’ve been listening to since I was a child and have influenced what I do and how I do it like Alejandro Sanz, Ricardo Arjona ... that kind of artists. Integral artists. I see them as inspiration and as guides. I didn’t play any instruments. I was a musician by blood. But seeing those artists made me aspire for something more. They’re not only performers and composers, they’re behind every song and they play their own instruments, and that made me prepare myself and study. That’s something good about me I guess, that when I set myself to do something, I will not rest until I achieve it.”

What has been your greatest challenge in your artistic journey?

“This has been more like dreaming awake for me. I never stop, and the top is God’s and I only enjoy these moments that He allows me to live and experience and the same way I’ve been blessed with great fans, nominations, etc. I’m going to continue living through this, but I would like to keep my two feet on the ground and keep being the same person that I am. I dedicate my life and work to God, and my challenge would be to keep working for Him without stepping away from my path.”
